I’m always looking for inspiration. A new perspective. I think that’s why I’ve been taking these random photos of things above me.
It’s easy to see why the ceiling of a baroque cathedral dating back to 1782 would have me stop in awe and ponder over how long it took the painters and sculptors to complete this masterpiece. But then, my mind wanders to the twist of fate that is the reality of European conquerors coming to a foreign land to assert their power and dominate native peoples under the guise of religion. I can’t really know the intentions of these 18th century humans, but it does change my perspective.
It may be why I am drawn to simpler designs presenting in unexpected ways. This bistro umbrella spoke to me as I was enjoying my morning tea at a beachside boardwalk cafe. The red and white stripes were mesmerizing and made me smile. I think to myself, “I can quilt that.” So I quickly snap a photo before I lose the opportunity.
Then there’s the grand lobby of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego which prompted me to photograph it as my sister explained its architectural function. The postmodern star-shaped clerestory (I had to look up the definition of this word) provides light to the interior, and, in this case, adds a flamboyance to the space that, no doubt, architects from VSBA intended as a way to continue delighting the visitor. After a tiny bit of research, I discovered that renovations to this building over several decades have added thoughtful additions in keeping with the neighborhood but also offering something new to contemplate.
I tell myself, keep looking up. These opportunities to be inspired, to reflect or even to challenge one’s thinking, will never let you down.
Beautiful photos and great food for thought!
